Celebrating 50 Years

Your home is an expression of your personality and we want to help give your home the intention it deserves. We pride ourselves on forming intimate relationships with our customers to make sure each and every purchase is made with confidence; knowing we stand behind all of our products.

Started in 1972 by partners Chris Foss and Foster Rose, the Greenhouse is celebrating 50 years in business! Opened with only $1500 in borrowed capital and a passion for tropical plants, Greenhouse combined a strong sense of community with an eagerness to meet the changing needs of a growing Bellingham, from the very beginning. This led to the introduction of housewares products and home furnishings in the mid 1970's. Looking to retire, in 2015 the original Greenhouse owners made the difficult decision to list the business for sale. A number of interested buyers came forward; but none of them seemed fit. Chris & Fos made the difficult decision to close the store in November of 2017.

Shortly after announcing its intent to close; current owners Eric and Bre Green stepped forward with an offer to purchase the store and retain its legacy and mission; serving downtown Bellingham and the community. Today; Greenhouse continues to remain an icon in downtown Bellingham.

Eric and Bre, along with their kids Taylor and Jacob; are working to build an even stronger foundation for the store, community, and invaluable customers. Both long-time residents of Whatcom County, they are active in their local community. Each and every item in the store is hand-picked and curated with careful attention. Bre manages the store on a daily basis while Eric continues his business in real estate; bringing over 19 years of experience in Whatcom County to all of his clients. Their combined mission is to deliver the highest level of customer service to each and every person, whether it is in the store, bringing value to a sellers home with staging, or showing future buyers the endless possibilities of how to make a house a home.

While the Greenhouse has a rich history of its own, nestled in historic downtown Bellingham, 1235 Cornwall Avenue has a long history of its own.

Originally built in 1895, the building itself is older than the city of Bellingham. The city wasn't officially incorporated until December of 1903. It was built for Edward Fischer as the two-story "Fischer Block". The third story was added in 1923, and the basement was remodeled by Frank C. Burns. In 1936 the building received another makeover, and stucco was applied to modernize the appearance. As befitting a home furnishings + decor store, the four-story masonry structure has been updated with modern conveniences over time (new windows, heat, etc.) Other inhabitants of the building include the Owl Pharmacy, who utilized it for their main branch from before 1901 to 1963.

Just as 1235 Cornwall Avenue has evolved, the Greenhouse store will continue to evolve with our Bellingham community and serve all your home and lifestyle needs. Bellingham is, and will always be, our Belling-home.
